All For A Pause, All For Later: What To Do With Procrastination?

To begin with, it is worth saying that each of us postpones something or has postponed it before. This is OK.

We are all more willing to take on what we like. This is understandable – it is much more pleasant for us to do what we like, it turns out, inspires. And, of course, it is not so pleasant to do something uncomfortable, incomprehensible, or new.

Someone works with this, builds new strategies of behavior, and “strains” to change something. And someone is now at the stage when they already really want changes and constantly think about it and tell friends/family. Someone from time to time remembers this when something is “sick” and there is no strength to endure. It’s not always the same. There are different motivations for change, there are different resources and opportunities. BUT each of us can change what we want in our lives.

What “traps” keep us in a state of procrastination?

  • I want to make it perfect right away (of course, the first time!), but until I feel that I can do it perfectly, I won’t even start. Do you understand? This feeling doesn’t go away. It will always seem to us that we are about to do it perfectly.
  • I want to do everything at once, but the task is large and requires a fairly large amount of time and effort. Therefore, I will now do something small, and then! I will devote enough time to my important work. Here, too, everything is clear – small things do not end, usually, it happens that way.
  • It’s difficult for me / I don’t know how – of course, I will put off what I don’t know how and don’t know. Our brain is responsible for this and it does everything to make our today look like our yesterday. In other words, it ensures our safety, and thanks to this we are alive. It is easier for us to do what we already know how to do.
  • I don’t know where to start, so I take on everything at once a little bit. I do not see results in the short term and stop acting. We need success and results in order to keep doing something. Otherwise, we consider it nonsense. It is the plan and intermediate results (which we measure) that allow us to move forward.
  • I’m afraid to make a mistake, so I won’t start. The fear of error/failure is often much greater than the error itself. And each of us tends to project scenarios in advance – both positive and negative. And, it is logical that negative scenarios stop us.
  • There are more important things that require attention and presence now. This is something from which it is difficult for us to “get out” because there are a familiar schedule, environment, and actions. Breaking out of your routine is not easy.

This is part of the traps we fall into. And we can turn each of them into our strengths if we approach this consciously and with humor 🙂 The main condition is to turn on our 100% and take the time to analyze and develop new behavior strategies.
