Tattoos: What Do Ukrainians Think About Them?

Since the middle of the last century, brutal men on massive bikers, rockers, and representatives of various subcultures have painted their own bodies.

 However, over time, those wishing to make themselves a “commemorative drawing” did not decrease. Moreover, now tattoos serve as decoration not only on the usual parts of the body, but also on the face, under the lip, and even on the eye sockets. What do Ukrainians think about the popular way of “expressing themselves” – find out further in the material!

Fashion for tattoos went long before our time. Tattooing is one of the most ancient arts of mankind, which is rooted in prehistoric times.

Several centuries ago, the tattoo played the role not only as a decoration but also as a sign of the tribe, clan, and social affiliation. The ancients also believed that the magical power of a tattoo protects against evil spirits.

As you know, a tattoo can tell a lot about the habits, sympathies, and affections of an individual. The tattoo that has survived to this day also has different areas of application:

  • A kind of body art, that is, a type of avant-garde art;
  • Means of self-expression;
  • In criminology – a special sign for searching or for identifying and identifying a criminal or victim;
  • In the criminal world, it is used to identify within the criminal hierarchy (thieves in law, yakuza, etc.).

From September 7 to 16, 2019, a poll by Research & Branding Group was conducted in Ukraine, during which 2001 respondents aged 18 years and older were interviewed. This was done in order to find out what is the attitude toward tattoos in our country now.

The results show that almost half of Ukrainians (46%) are indifferent to tattoos, but do not encourage them. In this context, close to indifference is a surprise (11%). In other cases, the emotional reaction of the inhabitants of Ukraine is manifested as follows: tattoos and their carriers evoke positive emotions in 17% of Ukrainians (14% – sympathy and 3% passion). Negative emotions toward tattooed members of society are experienced by 22% of Ukrainians (17% – indignation and 5% – sympathy).

The frequency of manifestation of a particular emotional reaction to tattoo owners is associated with such characteristics of the population as gender and age. At the same time, a positive reaction to people who decorate themselves with tattoos is the same among men and women, but most often occurs among people under the age of 40 years. It is worth noting that the negative one is more characteristic of women and representatives of the oldest age category.

It can hardly be argued that in Ukraine the passion for tattoos is rampant. So, at present, the body of about one out of every ten Ukrainians (10%) is decorated with tattoos, while the remaining 90% do not have them.

Among the social factors that have the most significant influence on the choice to get a tattoo are also gender and age: tattoos can be found much more often in men than in women.

And depending on age, if every fifth of young people has a tattoo, then with its increase the number of such people decreases, reaching the level of statistical error among people 60 years and older.

Nevertheless, it should be noted that currently in Ukraine there is some reserve for expanding the circle of tattoo owners. So, 11% of Ukrainians would like to get a tattoo, although the majority (86%) are still not ready for such a step.

Most of those who want to get a tattoo among young people – every third. But the desire to get or not to get a tattoo does not depend on gender. On the diagrams, you can see more detailed results of the survey.
