The term “Swedish family” is widespread in the territory of the former USSR, as a common name for
group marriage. But what if we tell you that in fact, most Swedes prefer ordinary, normal families?
At least once in a lifetime, a person living in the territory of the former USSR has heard such a phrase as a “Swedish family”. We all know what it means, but we have never thought about its origin and the trick that lies behind this term.
What is a “Swedish family”
The phrase “Swedish family” is used when talking about a situation where three people are in a close relationship: they live together and have a sexual relationship. Simply put, it is a group marriage.
Why “Swedish family”?
This expression appeared in the 70s of the XX century, on the territory of the former USSR, and then firmly established itself in the languages of the countries that it included, despite the fact that all the denials said that the Swedes do not live together, but prefer to create monogamous families.
Swedish magazines and films of erotic content, as well as the popularity of the ABBA group, which consisted of two couples, made their contribution to strengthening the myth of the Swedish family.
Perhaps the term was also influenced by the myth of the immorality of the Swedes, which spread in the West in the late 1960s. Journalists described Sweden as Sodom and Gomorrah: the authority of the church is at zero, couples are unmarried, children are born out of wedlock! Nightmare!
Social policy was also criticized, for the amount of money that the Swedish government spent on the social sphere.
What is really
Most Swedish families prefer, as we wrote above, monogamy. But even here there is a small catch: they live in an unregistered marriage for several reasons.
Firstly, cohabitants have the same responsibilities as legitimate husbands and wives. And secondly, the high cost of the official divorce procedure and its lengthiness repel people from official marriage.
Forums about the “Swedish family”
It turned out that on the forums this topic is extremely popular for discussion. So, for example, one of the users describes the situation to her friend:

“Recently, I also talked with a colleague on this topic and this topic interested me. They live together with a colleague. The family budget consists of 3 salaries. She says when she lived with one MCH, there was less money. They both had to save money. And now they are happy financially. The three of us are really more fun and safer. Repairs in her apartment were done much faster. As she says, while one is at work, the second is at home, then they change. One of her MCH let tenants into his apartment – the 4th salary.
